Nov / Dec Update

A few updates...

1. A friendly reminder that tomorrow is "Bring you parent(s) to youth group." This is NOT a parent's meeting, but an opportunity for you to join in and participate in youth group.

2. We'd like to bless our friends with GoodSports Hungary this Christmas by collecting toothbrushes, toothpastes and deodorants for orphanages. In Hungary, orphanages do not have the money to purchase these items for kids, so kids have to scrape up enough money to buy them on their own, or they simply go without.

We have a former student flying to Hungary in December to serve with GoodSports, and he will check a suitcase with our donations. Because his space is limited, we are keeping donations to toothbrushes, toothpastes and deodorants.

We will collect donations this week and the week after Thanksgiving (Dec 2). Beginning tomorrow, there will be a collection point by the PYOC office in the North Chapel annex.

3. Please note that PYOC will NOT meet Thanksgiving week (NO Vision/Salvage on Tuesday, Nov 25 and NO Bible studies on Wednesday, Nov 26). Regular meetings will resume Dec. 2.

4. PYOC's annual Ugly Christmas Sweater and White Elephant Gift Exchange Christmas Party will take place during Vision and Salvage on Tuesday, December 16th. Students should wear a festive/gaudy Christmas sweater... either store bought or homemade and they should bring a wrapped white elephant gift (either a recycled gift or store bought gift of less than $5). We'll have snacks, play a few games and exchange presents.

5. PYOC youth groups and Bible studies will NOT meet over Christmas break.

Relationship Series

Dear Parents of PYOC students,

We are so blessed to partner with you in discipling your child.  It is our desire to reinforce the Biblical truths you are already instilling in them.

On April 22, we will begin a relationships series.  We will look at relationships with God, friends, and parents, as well as dating, marriage, and sex.

Discussions on dating will come from Song of Solomon, “Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires.”  If dating’s purpose is finding a spouse, then students should delay dating until they are ready to marry.  They should have non-romantic relationships with others of the opposite gender in the context of groups.

Discussions regarding marriage and sex come from Hebrews 13:4.  We will teach that God’s design for sex is within a loving marriage relationship between one man and one woman, for a lifetime.  We will also address purity wreckers such as media choices, pornography, “how far is too far,” etc.  in age appropriate contexts.

We will conclude the series with a purity event for parents and students on June 3 (details to come, please save the date!).  As always, you are welcome to join any of our gatherings to further your own discussions with your child.  We also understand if you would prefer your child stay home for some of these conversations.

April 22          God is Relational
April 29          Relationships with Friends / Peer Pressure
May 6             Relationships with Parents & Authorities
May 13           Dating & Marriage
May 20           Purity Wreckers
May 27           Panel Discussion with PYOC Staff
June 3             Purity Event with Parents

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Very Respectfully,
Kevin Scheible and Beth Mabry

Parenting Teenagers Class

What: Parenting Teenagers Class
Who: All parents of teens or future parents of teens
When: Sundays 1400-1600   March 16-April 13
Where: Pulaski Religious Youth Center

Are you concerned about your teenager?  Would you like to be a better parent to your teen?

Join Brad Ellgen (Cadence Adult Ministry Missionary) to see the joy of guiding the process of your teenagers growing into adults.

Please feel free to contact Kevin (kevin.scheible@cadence.org) or Brad (brad.ellgen@cadence.org) for more information about this class.

Here's a little from Brad about the class he will be teaching:

Adolescents are constantly hearing conflicting messages from their friends, the media, teachers, parents and church leaders.   They will decide which voices they will listen to and with little experience to guide them they will make decisions which could alter the course of their lives.  The stakes are truly high.  Yet parents remain the most influential voice in teen's lives.

Parenting two boys who transitioned from being children into men was without question the hardest thing we have ever done.   We watched our teens make increasingly dangerous and foolish decisions.  We were scared, confused, losing influence and seldom had much certainty in what we were doing as parents.

However, we were not alone.  During this time God provided a group of other parents who supported us in the process.  We met together every week to pray, study God's word and honestly share our struggles.  This group of parents became dear to us.  Not because they had the answers or a formula for success, but because they cared and loved us.

Our two sons are in the mid 30's now with families of their own.   When we are together now we remember and laugh together about their adolescent years.  God was so good to us.

However, Debbie and I know that not all parents have the kind of support / study group that we had.  We know how meaningful that was to us and would like to offer that kind of class to any parents who would like to join us to study God's words and think together about how He wants us to parent our teenagers.
